For the first time in a while, I didn’t wake up already sweating. It was nice/nostalgic. Though, it was due to cloud/rain/wind.
Risa went and checked out the fresh produce vendors at the michi-no-eki, while I screwed around and wrote Monday’s blog. She came back with 1L of delicious drinking yoghurt, some small sausages, beans and some tomatoes. I was tempted to make an English fry-up for breakfast, but laziness helped me to postpone it until dinner.
We backtracked towards Sendai to check out a waterfall (Akiu Otaki) near the onsen town of Akiu. I’ve been here for a little over two years now, and I still don’t see the attraction of an onsen hotel holiday. I enjoy an onsen, but I don’t enjoy it that much that I would devote my holiday to it. These onsen towns also fascinate me, with their large onsen hotels, and the dozens of omiyage (souvenir) shops. They generally don’t see that busy, how do they survive? Anyway…
The waterfall was further than I expected, which was to be expected. And, to further annoy me, the car park at the waterfall would have been an ideal place for us to camp last night… Anyway, we were here finally. The rain that had intensified as we left Murata had eased somewhat, so with the protection of a couple of umbrellas we walked through the shrine to have a look at the waterfall. Sadly, due to risk of rock falls, the walkway to the bottom of the waterfall was closed, so we had to satisfy ourselves with the view from above. It’s not that it wasn’t a beautiful view, because it certainly was, but it would have been nice to see it from below, to truly get an appreciate for its size (55m). Interestingly, it was signed as ‘one of Japan’s top three biggest/most beautiful waterfalls’. Curious, we checked to see what the others were, and Akiu Otaki wasn’t on any of the lists. In fact, there were several waterfalls much larger (including one that is 500m, though only flows May/June).
From Akiu, we headed to Shiroishi. Risa has a friend that used to live/work there (as an ALT on JET), and he recommended we try a local specialty, umen. As far was we can tell, it’s basically somen but less oily? Anyway, it was a nice feed. Over enthusiastically, we ordered a large bowl of umen as well as a lunch set featuring tenpura donburi, umen and tsukemono. It was all delicious, but it was definitely gluttony. After lunch we went to have a peep at the castle in town. It’s a nice castle, though nothing spectacular/unique. We didn’t spend too much time there. More interestingly, as we were approaching the castle grounds, there were several men dressed in unique samurai costumes, complete with crazy head garments (one had golden deer horns, another a 1m wide crescent and my favourite with what looked like a hairy caterpillar). Sadly, they were too far to get a photo, and they looked too busy to want to pose for a photo for me. I should really be more confident/aggressive with photos…
Back in the car, we started to head to Fukushima-ken. The cute yellow caterpillar was somehow inside a closed book. It was stationary for quite sometime, until a gentle blow woke the little fellow up. Fukushima City seemed to drag on forever… Our plan was to check out the area around Mt Bandai, so we came to a nearby michi-no-eki (at Tsuchiyu). The wind is blowing, the rain is falling, and being high on a mountain, tonight may be the first time for me to use a blanket. Though, probably not…
２１日目：村田町道の駅（宮城県）—土湯道の駅（福島県）
今日は、あいにくの雨まじりの曇り空。ロスは、まだブログの更新中で私は、早く準備が終わったので、道の駅内の地元の名産市場をブラつく。なになに、、、蔵王の乳製品、地元の野菜に、農家のお母さんが漬けたお漬け物、仙台牛タン、仙台みそ、にゅうめん、はちみつなどなどなど、宮城県は、おいしそうなものがわんさかある。ん〜何かおいしいものが食べたいなぁ、、おいしそうなソーセージをゲット♪ これは、今日のディーナーにしよう☆蔵王のりさとロスの大好物飲むヨーグルトも半額でゲット☆あと、シリアルの為のヨーグルト。これは、朝ごはん。それから、トマトに豆、きゅうり。仙台のヘルシー食材をいっぱい買ってしまった♥
だけど残念ながら雨は、強くなる一方、、、それでも秋保の大瀑を見に出発！
と、その前に、昨日は村田に到着したのは、夜で見えなかったけど、なにやらここ村田は、蔵のまち。らしい。古い蔵が立ち並ぶ通りがありそこを通ってみる事に。 本当に時代劇にでてくるような古い、荘厳とした蔵が。ほんとに古いのが見てとれるけれども、堂々としたがっちりとした姿は、すばらしくかっこいい！しかもまだ使用されているものもあり、ステキだなぁと感動。すごいぞ村田！！
秋保の滝がある秋保温泉は、村田からは、1時間くらいで、地図で見るより意外と遠かった。大爆は、神社の境内を通っていく。 大きな滝なので少し歩く覚悟だったけど、神社から階段をおりてすぐだった。 残念ながら落石の危険の為、滝壺までは行けず下から滝を見下ろす事は出来なかったけど、少しはなれた中間地点位のここからでも大瀑の大きさは、よくわかった。高さは、５５mらしいけれど、それよりももっと高い所からものすごい量の水が落ちて来ているように思えた。こんな大量の水がながれているなんて不思議だなぁとまたまた自然は、すごいなぁと実感。この旅何度目か、そして何度これから思わされることやら楽しみだいっ！
秋保を出発して目指すは、宮城白石。ここは、友達が４年ほど前にＡＬＴをしていた所で、歴史のあるなかなかステキな町だと聞いていたので、一度訪れてみたかった。 白石の郷土料理である、温麺（にゅうめん）で、友達がいつも行っていたというおいしいお店が駅のすぐ前にあるらしい。なにやら創業１００年以上の歴史あるお店らしい☆ となりの人が食べていた天ぷらがめっちゃおいしそうだったので、天丼とにゅうめんのセット、そして、けんちんにゅうめんを注文。 まず最初にけんちんの方が登場〜！でかいっ！ ロスは、二種類を半分こするのにお椀をかりて取り分けると、半分でちょうどいい量くらい。にゅうめんの麺は、そうめんを少し太くしたような感じで、味は、そうめん。おだしのきいたお汁に人参、里芋などの具材が入っている。今日は、気温も２４度位だったので、体もこころもあった〜くなる味でした☆ つづいては、天丼とのセット。（日替わりのお手頃セット） てんぷらの衣が厚すぎなく、そしてここまでかっ！ってくらいにカリっと揚がっていて、もしかしたら今までで一番おいしい天ぷらだったかも！そして天丼のたれもちょっと固め炊きのご飯とからみ、最高♥ セットのにゅめんは、本日は、大好きな山菜にゅうめんでした☆こちらは、けんちんのほうよりもあっさりとしたお汁でもっとだしの味を堪能できる。 お店の人と帰りに話してみるとちゃんと友達の事を覚えていました♪ あぁうまかった！そしてめっちゃお腹いっぱい。 ちなみに温麺の名前の由来は、昔、青年が体によい油のつかわない麺の作り方を旅人の僧侶教えてらい、病気の父親に食べさせると体調かもどり、それを聞きつけた大名に献上したところ大変喜ばれ、父親思いのこころ温かい青年をたたえ、温麺（にゅうめん）と名付けた。 らしい。 へ〜たしかにほっとする味、初めてなのに懐かしい味がしたなぁ。
お腹もいっぱいになり次は、白石城見学！ 小さいお城だけど、なかなか立派なたたずまいざんすよ。 なにかの撮影のためか、侍のかっこうをした人達がいた。涼しい日でよかったね。 そしてなぜか彼らのカブとの上には、鹿の角の形をした金色のがついてたり、黄金のムカデみたいのだったり、どでかい三日月だったり、へんなのが頭についてた。ナゾ〜。 それにしても宮城は、どこも古い建物が残っていて、民家も城のような出で立ちだし、水田も情緒があるし、色々おいしいひ、海も山もあるし、、、なかなか魅力的な所☆ また来たいな。
そんな思いを残しつつ、次の出発地を目指し白石を出発。 次は、福島県へ。今日の目標は、磐梯山の近くあたり。 あっと言う間に福島県に入り、福島市内を走り抜ける。 あんまり古い建物もみたらず、あまり魅力的には、見えなかった。たぶん山がわに魅力がつまってるのかな。 天気もよくないので、早めにもよりの道の駅でステイする事に決定。 道の駅つちゆ。
明日は、天気次第での行動。晴れれば、磐梯山あたりを散策する予定だけど、悪天候ならひたすら南下かな〜。 晴れますように！！
それでは、今日も寝る支度をすませ、、、もちろんデクスター☆
