Day Twenty – Cooktown and Trevathan Falls

A small victory for the man with the small bladder – this morning when I woke at 2AM to have a quick toilet trip, I was overwhelmed by the stars in the sky. The half-moon was just starting to rise, and this illuminated the ground just enough so that I could almost see where I was walking, but not enough light to drown out the stars. I still don’t feel comfortable standing in the dark in nature. Every small sound I heard made me think the worst for the smallest period of time, then the logic told me it was just a cricket…

We parted with the French boys, Thibout and Thiery as we pulled in to Cooktown. We had chores to perform (shopping/blogging/phone calls), so no point them hanging around for that. They were on their way to Darwin to find work for a while, so hopefully we’ll see them towards the end of July when we’re in Darwin.

The view from the lookout in Cooktown was amazing – the river, the coastline, the rugged tropical mountains. Beautiful. We walked/sat at the lookout for a while just enjoying the view.

The town itself was quite nice – much more pleasant than Port Douglas, or any other of the other tourist towns that came before it. Well worth a visit.

We also went to check out the bronze Captain James Cook, and in the same park they were preparing for the annual landing re-enactment that takes place on Queens Birthday (June 10^th). We’d love to watch the real thing (not just the rehearsal), but timing is unlikely…

We read in Lonely Planet about a blissful and semi-hidden waterfall/swimming hole on the way out of Cooktown. It was a mission to get there, second-doubting the directions all the way. But, eventually, we got to a part in the trail that was too difficult for our mobile-home to pass, but near enough that we could hear the sound of the falls, so we walked the last 500m. Trevathan Falls – ask a local for directions (or search Lonely Planet).

I don’t know what I was expecting (or even if I was), but the falls were WAY bigger than I’d imagined, and much much more beautiful. The sound of the water crashing down was quite frightening – so much so that swimming in the waterhole wasn’t all that alluring.

But, we did venture to underneath (or as close as we could safely go) the waterfall. Exhilarating isn’t a strong enough superlative for the way it felt – better than a can of Red Bull any day (even the original Thai one)!

From here we headed south via (the imaginatively named) Black Mountain National Park. We drove past here yesterday, but we didn’t stop. It’s quite amazing to look at – it’s really appears to be a giant pile of black boulders that have been placed on top of each other (instead of a large granite rock that was full of faults/fractures that has slowly been eroded into a pile of smaller rocks). Oddly, it said that people have died trying to climb the mountain (If I had the time, I’d love to climb it…).

Campsite tonight is also, amazing. High up on a hill overlooking the tablelands. Beautiful sunset. Beautiful. Full of beauty.

２０日目　６月２日（日）　ハロー！クック船長！

今日もお茶漬けから朝が始まり、目指すはクックタウン！　昨晩キャンプした場所からは、３０分ほど。　クックタウンでは電波が久々にあるので、ブログの更新と買い物などなどを済ませなければならない為、フレンチボーイズとはここでお別れ。　彼らは、真珠養殖の仕事を見つけるためダーウィンへ向けて出発したので、もしかしたらダーウィンで再会できるかな。　まだ旅を初めて２日目との事なので、ボン＊ボヤージュ！

この先ケープーヨークにはスーパーがないらしいので、とりあえずクックタウン唯一の小さなスーパー、IGAで買い物をすませ、（大きな街からはかなり離れているので、値段はやはり割高です。）
高台からクック船長達が到着した湾を見下ろしました。１８０°は、海と川が広がっており、残り１８０°は山々が何処までも連なっている素晴しい景色でした。　町は、郵便局、パブ、宿、肉や、八百屋など生活に必要な店が１つずついくつかあるのみの小さな町で、こんな僻地じゃなければ誰もが住みたくなる様な本当に素晴しい絶景と歴史のまちです。

町のそばにある浜ぞいの公園では、ちょうど来週クック船長の来豪を記念するお祭りで、クック船長一団の到着を再現する市民による劇の練習が行われていました。　ちょうど１週間差で見逃すのが残念だねと話していたので、コスチュームなどは着ていませんが、思いがけずお祭りを垣間見れたのでラッキーでした☆

この先は、バラマンディという魚がよくつれるエリアで、川釣りが気軽に楽しめるらしいので、公園の近くの小さな釣りショップでルアーをいくつか購入しました。

クックタウンを離れ、秘境のような隠れた滝があるという場所を目指します。

ロンリープラネットという旅人のバイブル書によると、特に大きな観光用のサインがある訳ではなく、なかなか見つけにくいらしい。さっきの釣り屋さんでもう一度行き方を確認したので、無事着けるかな。　今朝着た道の方向へMt.Amos Rd.というサインを探しながら探し続けると、あはは、なんと昨晩泊まった場所のすぐ隣の道路でした笑　知っていたら、フレンチボーイズも行きたがってたので、朝シャンしに一緒に行けたのに〜

メインの道路からMt.Amos Rd.を左折（クックタウン方面から来た場合）、８、９km進むとFALLというサインがあるのでそこを右折。（４WDのみ走行可能）さらにそこから２kmで分岐点があるので、そこを右折。そこから３、４kmほどまた進み右折。　道は、車が１台やっと通れる舗装なしの、でこぼこ道で、小川も途中いくつか渡り、途中でこれ以上は車で上がれないだろーよ！ってな道に着いたので、車を降りて徒歩で少し歩いてチェックしてみると、お！遠くに滝の音が聞こえる！
音が聞こえるってことは、そう遠くないだろうと見込んで、車を止めて徒歩で散策してみることに。けもの道ほどのトラックを１０分ほど辿るとあったー！　なかなか大きな滝で、水量も豊富。　　かなり僻地で誰もいないし、ひんやり少し薄暗く、音もかなり大きいのでちょっとコワイ。でも記念撮影をすませ、滝のすぐ側までいって水浴びをしてきました。迫力がすごいのでちょっと恐かったけど、超フレッシュなシャワーを浴びて、とってもリフレッシュできました☆　　恐怖に打ち勝ち、大自然の力強さを満喫したぞー！

野生児シャワーを終えたころ、年配のご夫婦が到着。　彼らは、以前クックタウンに住んでいたので、よく友人をつれてここに来ていたそうです。　以前釣りをしたけど、カメしか連れなかったエピソードやこの先の道について色々アドバイスをもらいました。（ちなみに亀は、ネイティブのアボリジニの人々のみ食べる事が許されているそうです。）

滝を離れ、今夜の宿 James Earl Lookout (展望所) に向かいました。　オーストラリアは、このような展望所や道のレストエリアが道の駅のように２４時間トイレが多数あるので、今のところキャンプサイト代が浮いてとても助かります。　　滝からは、１時間ちょっとでちょうど夕日がキレイな時間に到着。　見渡す限り、山並みがどこまでも続いているとても美しい場所が今晩のお宿です。　車泊ってステキ☆

今晩は、ロス君が暮れ行く美しい山並みをバックに、ロス君大好物のバンガーズ＆マッシュ（ソーセージとマッシュポテトと野菜）を作ってくれました♫

明日は、いよいよケープヨークに足を（デリちゃんを）踏み入れます！！
