Day Seventeen – Pancakes and Gardens

Today in two words – Pancakes and Gardens.

Michel made a giant stack of crepe-like pancakes and we took them to the botanic gardens to eat them: strawberry jam and cream; nutella, banana and cream; and lemon and sugar. Delicious.

The gardens were really pretty, actually. Very well maintained and a huge and varied selection of plants. The giant leaf of the Elephant Ear was too fun a prop not to play with.

I proposed the question, “I wonder what it tastes like..?”, and Risa and Simon obliged and gave it a bite and a chew. First reports were it tasted like salad, and that it was sweet. Not wanting to miss out, I was going to give it a bite, too. JUST as I was about to, Risa changed her mind and decided that I shouldn’t! Risa and Simon ran off to a tap to wash their mouths out… Turns out that it wasn’t a good idea to bite/eat – their mouths/lips/throats were burning! Risa still doesn’t feel great in her throat… Whoops!

There was also a really nice walking trail that went to the top of a mountain – except, we didn’t realise that was the trail that we were walking on (6.6km!), so when we realised (and we were starting to wonder why we were going up and up and up) we turned back around.

Beautiful orchid section, too – including awesome insectivore plants.

The weather (yes, boring) was really variable today – we woke up to heavy rain and dark menacing clouds, it was sunny and beautiful when we were in the gardens at lunch-time, and now at 5PM, it was windy with cool drizzle – just as we were headed to The Esplanade to go for a swim. It wasn’t really that alluring with the current temperature, but since I’d passed every other opportunity to swim here (and it being my last evening in Cairns – for the foreseeable future) we braved the frigid temperatures and waddled in.

…and five minutes later waddled back out as we were cold!

Good (relative) news from the mechanic – Deli-chan was ready for collection! Went to collect her this evening, except I was blocked by a $2000 daily limit on spending… For the second time today, Whoops!

Omurice for dinner with Ze Germans – making the most of the RACQ apartment, we’ll move out and return the hire car in the morning then head north for Cape Tribulation.

１７日目　５月３０日（木） パンケーキと植物園

朝、ジュディスちゃんと来年夏のミュンヘンのオクトーバーフェスト（世界一有名なビアガーデン祭り）での再会を誓ってお別れ。　サイモンとマイケル君が空港から帰って来くるとなんとその手には、小麦粉とお砂糖が！　おととい再会した時にマイケル君はウマいパンケーキ（日本のとちがってうすくてクレープのよう）を作ると評判だったけど、朝ごはんには材料がなかったので残念と思っていたらランチの為に買って来てくれた〜！

天気もそこそこなので今日は、クレープを持って植物園でピクニックをすることに。　　植物園は、ケアンズの空港のそばなんだけど、そういえば空港の側の牧場には、おそらく百匹以上のカンガルーがいつもいる場所があります。　馬もそこには、いるんだけど、あれはやっぱり野生じゃなく飼育されてるのかな。

植物園の地図が分かりにくくてちょっと迷いながら、やっとテーブルを見つけるもペンキ塗りたてサインが、、でも工事のおじさんにきいたらもう大丈夫なようで、私たちが塗り立て１番で使用しました☆　ラッキー笑　まだちょっと温かいクレープにそれぞれ、チョコ、バナナ、いちごジャム、レモン、お砂糖などお好きなトッピングをして美味しく頂きました。マイケル君ありがとう！

植物園は熱帯雨林の植物を中心に、小さい頃図鑑で見てずっと見てみたかった、珍しい食虫植物などもありました。
トトロにでてくる大きな傘になるような葉っぱを見つけました。（既に刈られている）　根元がセロリの様でどんな味がするんだろうねとふざけてたら、サイモン君がかぶりついた笑　　なんかちょっとフレッシュでいける！　なんていうから私も調子にのってちょっとかじってみたら、、、最初はちょっと甘くてウマい。で、ちょっと酸っぱくなったら、、、なんかパイナップル食べた時見たいにビリビリしてきた！　そしたらサイモン君もなんか口と喉ががビリビリしてきた様で大慌て笑　　あやうくロスとマイケル君もかじる寸前でやめました。　　すすぎ、うがいを繰り返し３０分程で治まりましたが、やっぱ植物園にある植物だからってアホなことは、するべきではないです。　でも根は、イモになっていて食用って書いてあるんだけどね。茎は、おすすめしません笑
そんなアホな事件の後も散策再会。　けど地図をちゃんと見なかったせいで間違って登山が始まってしまった。　２０分ほど行った所で引き返し、全員疲労と蚊に襲われまくったので退散し、ラグーンに行く事にしました。

街につくと虹がでてた！　残念ながら写真にはおさめられなかったけどきれいでした。　でも雨もふってきた。。　　日もかげり、すでに４時過ぎだったので、みんなは退散したところで私たちはちょっと泳ぐ事に、けど寒すぎて１５分くらいで退散。　ここでデリカが直ったとの連絡が。　明日は、いよいよケアンズから脱出だ〜

今晩は、みんなにオムライスを作ってあげることにしました！
