Day Four – Mackay, Airlie Beach and Bowen (454km)

Slow start to the morning fixing a few things on the Delica that needed attention – finally got around to replacing the nuts/bolts that were holding the rear windows in place and put in the genuine rubber parts.

We were meeting up with my long-lost friend from university day, Andy (Andrea), whom I haven’t seen since the end of 2007.  She’s now living in Mackay, and luckily had the day off work for study (she was meant to be working on an assignment, but we provided a nice distraction for her.

We didn’t spend a whole lot of time in Mackay – it was to be another day of driving…

From Mackay we headed to Airlie Beach. Risa wanted to visit, and I haven’t been since I was a primary schooler. I remember that there wasn’t that much there – that it was basically a gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. Well, it’s pretty much the same, still. Except, it’s probably also a good place to go drink/party with British/European backpackers.

We were going to sit on the beach and share a beer, except the beach was so disappointingly average that we just jumped back into the van and headed north. Dinner at Bowen, but the signs that are hung from every available location with threats of a $2000 fine for camping/staying the night in the rest area made us leave after dinner was consumed.

The next rest stop (at Guthalungra) had the same signs, but there were caravans/campervans and tents, so we thought we’d be safe in numbers – surely they couldn’t fine us all! (though, it would be good for the enforcement agency’s budget if they did…)

Early night. Tomorrow is the Ayr Races with Chelle! Can’t wait. We’ve been told that if we stay to the last race of the evening, we’ll be given a box of vegies!

今日は、土曜日のAyrのレースに間に合う様に移動日と設定しました。朝起きると天気が回復していてとても気持ちのいい朝です。　前からネジの調子が悪かった後部のドアを修理して、ロスの大学友達のアンディーちゃんに会うためにMackayを目指しました.。　途中お腹が減ったので、田舎町のスーパーに寄ったらなんと野菜つめ放題＄３をやっていた！　ラッキー♫　　リンゴ、コリアンダー、トマト、ベビーキャロット、ライム、レモンなどなど色々詰め込んだりました☆　となりのパン屋さんもなぜかめちゃくちゃ安くなってて、なんだかこの田舎町はバーゲンハンターのパラダイスのようです。
このエリアは他には、サトウキビ栽培が盛んな地域で辺り一面ザワワザワワな感じです。　Mackayは、思っていたより街でした。というかブリスベンの郊外にある大きさ並みのショッピングーセンターあって、駐車も楽なのでそこで彼女と落ち合いました。　彼女の仕事は、鉱山関係の仕事なので、以前はWA州のもっと田舎に住んでいたそうで、そこに比べるとここは本当に大都会だそうです。　ロスと彼女は、お互い海外＆ど田舎に住んでいたので、会うのはなんと５年ぶりだそうです。お互い結婚したり、なんども引っ越したりで話はつきませんでしたが、２時位にはまた移動を開始して、今度はAirlie Beachを目指しました。

途中はまたざわわざわわな感じで、あんまり景色に変化がなくて正直ちょっと飽きちゃいました。　　しかもようやく到着したAirlie Beachは、めっちゃがっかり！！　小さいし、全然砂も茶色いしキレイじゃない！
オーストラリアに来たら絶対行った方がいいよって言われたら完全無視した方が良いです。ここは、沖合がグレートバリアリーフなので、そこからフェリーに乗って、White Heaven Beach, Hamilton 島へ行けば本当に真っ白な砂のビーチや珊瑚礁へのツアーがでているんだけど、もしそれが目的なら、ここには絶対泊まらないで、Hamilton島や(

2月に日本から遊びにきた両親と泊まりましたが、良かったです。）他の島に泊まった方がいいです。　ビーチは本当に銭函ビーチにヤシの木が生えた程度。。。周りはお土産屋さんやバーばっかり。　おすすめ度マイナス１５００くらいです。

そんながっかりなAirlieBeachを後にして、どうせなのでもう少し北上して、途中で、鶏肉を今日ゲットしたコリアンダーとライムとお醤油でマリネしてそれをレタスとトマトのシンプルなサラダと一緒に頂きました。　最近は、忙しくて外食ばかりだったので、久々に野菜をもりもり食べたど〜。

けどそこは、キャンプのため寝泊まりしては行けない所なので、また北上をつづけて、今は、Ayrまで６０kmのGuthalungraという所にいます。ここも昨晩と同じく２４時間トイレがある公園／休憩所です。周りは暗くてよくみえないけど、キャンピングカーがいっぱい泊まっていてみんなここで一夜を過ごすみたいです。

明日はいよいよレースの日！！そして大好きなシェルちゃんと再開の日〜♥　ああ楽しみ♥  万馬券当てるどぉ〜！
