It was lucky that I checked where the Adelaide River crocodile jumping tours start from, because I’d just assumed it was from the town of the same name, Adelaide River, which is on the Stuart Hwy between Darwin and Katherine. For reference, they are actually on the Adelaide River (river, not the town) on Arnhem Highway. It was actually pretty funny driving there this morning, as there must be a bit of competition with these jumping croc tours – the slagging match on the signs on the highway were pretty funny. We went with The Original Adelaide River Jumping Crocodile tour. $25 for an hour long cruise up the Adelaide River.
We literally sat down in our chairs on the boat, before the tour even began, and we saw our first croc. LOLZ.
But seriously, no sooner had we left the dock did we start spotting crocodiles – and big ones too! They estimate that there are some 7000 saltwater crocodiles living in this river system, and judging by the frequency we were seeing them this morning, I’d tend to believe it. I felt like a fool for taking photos of the first crocodile that I saw on the distant bank on the other side of the river.
The tour was a circus, and they don’t try to pretend that it’s anything but. They coax these giant crocodiles to jump two metres out of the water for a couple of pork chops on a string. They make the croc jump twice and let it have it on the third attempt.
It doesn’t matter the pretext, seeing these giant crocodiles up close (you could see them looking at you through the windows on the bottom floor of the boat) and seeing the height that they could jump for food was awesome, and easily worth the $25/each we paid.
After several smaller crocodiles, they ended the tour with the resident dominant male, Agro. This guy was HUGE!
And, to make it a more well rounded tour, they even through some pork scraps out for the kites (which were crazy fast and a real challenge to try to photograph).
We left feeling on a high – it was a fun way to start the morning.
We were in Darwin just before lunch, but sadly before we could actually enjoy anything, we had business to take care off. Deli-chan was booked in to the doctor. Again. This time it was to inspect/repair a knocking coming from the front end (which I just realised has been there for 5,000km now…) and to look at the air conditioning.
We left it with them (City Autos) and went about our tourist business. A quick walk along the esplanade (reading all the WWII bombing plaques and stories) and after a picnic lunch in the park (which was ruined by a pack of dump birds) we kept on exploring down to the new waterfront area. The water in Darwin looked amazing, but like most of Northern Australia, you can’t safely swim. Half the year there are dangerous stingers (jellyfish) and there are also the crocodiles (which we have a new respect for after this morning). Down in the new waterfront area they’ve built a small beach that is behind protective nets and patrolled by lifesavers – like Southbank in Brisbane, but more natural. There was also a waterpark, but I didn’t see the point in paying money to swim in a pool, when there was a perfectly good free one next door…
Finally heard back from the mechanic around 4PM (after we called them). Knocking noise were the front wheel bearings – rooted. And, the air conditioning requires a small fortune to repair (new compressor, labour and other parts was an estimated $4k! Which is so inflated it’s almost laughable). They were unable to find replacement bearings today, so we have to take it back to them in the morning to have another attempt. We’re making use of our RACQ insurance again, only this time there were no hotels available in our price range ($110/night from RACQ). Even a caravan park out past the airport was $40 for an unpowered site! What!
All week I told Risa that there is no chance that we will be in Darwin on Thursday night as I was sure that we’d be back on our way to Katherine by now. Well, it was Thursday night, and we are in Darwin, which means one thing – Mindil Beach Sunset Markets! We knew we were in the right place as there were cars and people everywhere, and all travelling in the same direction. We found a park and joined the inrush of people. First thing, the sun was setting, and it was an amazing sunset… that we shared with thousands of others. I got over the crowds and just enjoyed the light show, which really was spectacular (probably helped by all the smoke on the horizon).
I think the best thing about the markets were the smell. Walking through the food stalls was this most amazing smell of cooked meat and other flavours. The actual food though, not that different to what you’d find in a shopping centre food court – lots of fried Chinese food, kebabs and pizza. There were some interesting stalls like bush/game meat and also festival favourites Paella, Mexican, and jacket potato but they were just a little expensive. We bought some interesting Malaysian dishes that I don’t remember the names of (chilli fish, something like a samosa, something like a coconut rice satay chicken rice ball, and a sweet mochi-like sesame ball).
There were also arts/crafts stalls, and lots of street performers, but nothing that really took my interest (I’m more concerned about spending money to repair our car than trinkets at the moment).
It’s been a really busy day, almost hard to believe that it’s all been in a single day.
６5日目 ７月１8日 （木） クロコダイルジャンプとダーウィンの街
昨晩は、ダーウィンの街まで７０kmほどのレストエリアでフリーキャンプ。朝は、ここから１０分程のAdelaide River(アデレート川)でクロコダイルのジャンプツアーなるものに参加してきました。
キャサリンのホテルに置いてあった広告で２５周年記念でひとり＄２５ど激安だったので、正直どないなものかちょっと不安でしたが、これがすごかった！ この旅で支払った＄２５の中で、１番価値のある＄２５でした！
ボートは、2階建てで、上階は、オープンデッキ。下層は、ガラス張りになっています。
とりあえず私たちは、２階から観覧することに。 出発早々２分も立たないうちに、いるわいるわ！ 水面に数匹顔をだしているワニー！！
ちなみにこの川は、海水の川なので、生息しているのは、大型のソルト ウォーター クロコダイル。 川には、バラマンディなど多くの魚や亀、水鳥が生息しているので、食べ物に不自由することがまずないので、とても大きく育つそうです。
乗組員のおばさんが、大きな竿にポークチョップをぶらさげると、近づいて来たーどー！！
最初のは、メスのワニだったのでそこまで大きいものではないよと言っていましたが、それでも３m以上はあるそう。。
するとメスのクロさんより大きなオスのクロ様登場。 メスのクロさんは、ひょえ〜〜っと退散しました。
これが、同じ大きさくらいのオス同士だとかなり激しいバトルになるそうで、この川に住んでいるオスのクロコダイルは、足がいつくかないものが何匹かいるそうです。
クロコダイルの血には、かなり強力な抗生物質効果があるそうで、けがをしても傷口が腐る事はないそうで、現在クロコダイルの血液を研究し、人間にも使える薬の研究が行われているそうです。
泥の川なので、水はコーヒー牛乳色で、海中は全くみえないけど、それでも本当に素人の目でも右を見ても、左を見てもすぐに視界のどこかにクロコダイルを見つける事ができるほどいっぱいいます。 この川だけでもなんと、７０００頭のクロコダイルが生息しているそうです。 どおりで、、、、
５分おき位におばさんが、ポークチョップをぶら下げて、引っ張ったり、水中につけたり、野生の狩りの様に、うまくクロコダイルをじらしてジャンプさせます。 これは、餌付けといえば餌付けですが、えさを散撒いているのではなく、１日に３回のみ、７０００頭もいるので、彼らの生態を壊してはいないそうです。
上階から生で見るのももちろん見応えがありますが、（そして噛み付いたときの骨の砕ける音がコワイ！！）
ガラス越しとはいえ、下階は、本当に目の前でクロコダイルが肉に食らいつき、大きな目や、口、鋭い歯など超間近に観察できるのが、すごい迫力！！
途中体長まだ１mに満たない細くて小さなベイビーちゃんも発見。
クロコダイルは、だいたい３匹以上一回に卵を産むのですが、そのうち
１人前の大きさまで生き残るのは、そのうち１、２匹だそうで他は、同類にパックンコされちゃうそうです。 共食いって最強の弱肉強食。。。
そしてこの川のキングが姿を現しました。 彼は、体長６m越え。推定年齢６５歳、この辺りでは１番大きなアデレードリバーの支配者で、いつか彼より若い大きなワニが彼とバトルし、食べられちゃうまでは彼はずっとこの川の支配者だそう。
やはりキングなだけあって、あごが水面から見えた瞬間に、あ、これはヤバいほどデカイ！！！とすぐに分かるほど本当にデカいです！
そしてその１トン以上の巨体を起こして、３トンほどの顎力がある巨大な口をあけてジャンプ！
クロコダイルがいます。 遊泳禁止マークのところでは、絶対に泳がないようにとサインがある所では、誓います。 ぜったいに泳ぎません！！！！
川辺では、日光浴しているクロ様たちが。 ちょっと水泳、そしてたらふく喰ったあとは、日光浴して昼寝〜ってクロ様たちってだいぶリッチでうらやましい毎日を送ってるもんですね！
Adelaide River jumping Crocodile ツアー。 今回の旅行の中で、一番価値のある＄２５でした！ ちょうおススメ！！
ちょうどお昼に、ダーウィンに到着。 デリちゃんを修理点検に出して、私たちは街の探検にいってきました。
ダーウィンは、ノーザンテリトリー準集の州都で州の人口の６割がこの街にすんでいるそうです。 パースからは、４０４２kmはなれていますが、ジャカルタまでは、なんと２７００kmとオーストラリアではアジアに最も近い位置にあるためアジアの国々から移民が訪れ、１／４の人口がアボリジニの人々で、ヨーロッパを中心に多くのバックパッカーが滞在する場所なので、この小さな街では６５カ国の民族が住んでいるそうです。
そんな多国籍な街ダーウィンでは、毎週木曜日大きなナイトマーケットが開催されます。 運良く今日は木曜日！
と、その前に街の中心をぶらりとしてきました。岬に面して発展している街で、岬の端は公園になっていています。
第二次時世界大戦の際、ダーウィンはオーストラリア大陸で内で唯一、 日本軍から二度にわたり、爆撃され２５０名程の死者をだし、多くの被害を受けた場所でもあり、真珠湾攻撃よりも使われた爆弾の数は多かったそうで、その記念碑が公園のあちこちにありました。
これは、残念ながら、日本の義務教育ではこの事実は教科書では、語られていないと思いますが、オーストラリア人ならだれでも知っている事実です。
ノーザンテリトリー州都とはいえ、中心部はかなり小さくすべて見て回るのに2時間はかからない程です。
小さいながらも、近年の鉱山の発展により人口も増えているので、中心部からすこし離れた海の側が現在新しく開発しているエリアがあり、そこには海を見渡せるオシャレな高層マンションやレストラン、カフェ、ブティック、そしてバックパッカーや地元の家族連れに大人気の無料の人口ビーチがあります。
オーストラリアの税金は、高いけれこの国には、このような無料で誰でも楽しめる公共施設が充実している点では、オーストラリアはとても発展しています。
そんなこんなで、街をブラブラして、デリちゃんの点検結果を待つものの、状態は、あまり良くないよう。。。 明日また点検を続けるとのことで今晩は、キャラバンパークにとまることになりました。
チェックインをする前に、いよいよダーウィンでとても楽しみにしていたMindir Beachナイトマーケットへ出かけてきました。
多国籍な街なだけあって、アジアの屋台のような店が沢山でていて、とても良いとロスは聞いていたので、2人でとても楽しみにしていたのですが、、
とりあえず、ものすごい数の人、人、人！！！！！
食べ物に関しては、まぁ確かにチャーイニーズ、タイ、ベトナム、スリランカ、マレーシア、ブルネイなどなどの出店が多く、数もかなり多いのですが、ふつうの街のテイクアウェイの店が出店しているだけで、特に安いわけではないし、オーストラリアに住んでいれば特に目新しいものではなかったです。 数は、多くてもどの店も同じもの、同じ値段なのですぐ見飽きてしまいましたが、
春巻き（残念ながら、あまり美味しくなかった）、手羽餃子みたいなもの（というか中身は牛なのでハンバーグ 美味しいけど、ちょっとしつこい）、サテー（マレーシアの焼き鳥。ロスの大好物。いつのもより美味しかった！）、ブルネイの辛い魚の煮つけ？（微妙だった）、ブルネイの名前は、忘れちゃったけど、おこわみたいなものを買いました。
食べものの他は、安いジュエリーや、お土産屋さん、手づくり石けん、ハーブの店、アボリジニアートなどなど主に観光客向けの店です。
途中とてもキレイな夕日も見れたし、（こんなにビーチに人がいる光景は初めて見た。真夏の銭函より多かったよ！！笑）
色んなご飯も食べれたけど、期待してた台湾のような屋台みたいな、地元感溢れるマーケットではなかったのでちょっと残念！
今日は、どこのホテルもいっぱいなので、キャラバンパークに泊まりました。（RSCQ保険会社が払ってくれた）
かなり街から離れて空港の近くなので、飛行機がうるさいし、キャラバンパークのシャワー等はキレイで充実してるけど、とても込み合っていたので隣のテントからいびきも聞こえるし、やっぱキャラバンパークって好きじゃないなぁ。。っても１泊＄４５もするらしいから、RSCQに感謝しよう。
６６~７０日目 ７月１9日〜２２ デリちゃん不在。ダーウィン滞在。
金曜日、今日は街をブラブラしつつ、色々野暮用をすませたり。 移民局を発見したので、かれこれ1年半以上待っている私のVISAがどうなっているのか聞いてみたら、なんとぜんぜん進んでいないっぽい。。。しかも身体検査の期限は、１年間なのでまた＄４００ほど払って受け直さなければならないし、犯罪証明書も＄５０以上かけて取り直さなければならないと言われ気分は、最悪。。。なのでパースでまたやり直さなければならないーーー！！
そしてさらに残念なことに、デリちゃんの調子が悪いパーツがダーウィンにはないので、メルボルンから取り寄せのためそれが届く月曜日までは、何もできないとの事。 あぁああ、、、、、、、
日曜日にキャサリンでロデオ祭りがあってロスはとても行きたがっていかけど、それもどきないし、週末はおとなしくダーウィンに引きこもらなきゃならない。。。もう、見飽きたんだけどなぁ。
