We continued on the road south from Mount Isa to the quiet (but pretty) town of Boulia, which is famous for two things – Camel Races (in mid-July) and Min Min lights. Since it’s June 21 we clearly weren’t going to see the camel races, so we had to try and see the Min Min lights.
I’ve heard stories of these mysterious lights from various people (including my truck-driving father, and Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki on JJJ) so was interested in knowing more. Lucky for us there was a rather large Min Min Encounter museum/theatre/show! Unluckily, it operates on the hour, every hour (except for 12pm lunch break). I say unlucky because we just missed the 11AM one, so had to wait until 1PM. Not that easy killing nearly two-hours in a town the size of Boulia! Normally the area is home to thousands of budgerigas and other colourful native birds, but due to the severe drought that is gripping the area at the moment, the birds have gone elsewhere.
The Min Min Encounter show was $16 each. The tour started and we were greeted by mechatronic dummies telling the tale of the lights and the area. Surprisingly, it’s not so bad! I’m enjoying all the tales that the different characters have of their encounters. The stories are what they are, stories, but you can’t help but feel intrigued by their paranormal tales. When one tale ends, we’re subtly ushered to the next room where we’re greeted by a new set of mechatronic characters with a new tale of encounters. Sadly, photography was banned, so you’ll have to settle for my descriptions!
The tales all involved someone being outside at night-time and seeing some mysterious lights that either hovered in a location, or moved at incredible pace. Truck drivers, sheep shearers, house wives, bar flies.
In a bit of an anti-climax, the experience ended with a 360-degree rotating cinema that aimed to recreate an encounter with the lights. I don’t know how they could have done it better, but it ended up feeling a little… lame.
So, in the end, a little hard to justify the cost of entrance, but I guess when in Boulia…
From Boulia we started on our way to Alice Springs via the Plenty Highway, which is about 600km of unsealed roads through arid lands. I was prepared for the worst, but after Cape York, this road (so far) is tame. No corrugations, occasional bitumen, very occasional ruts, and lots and lots of little sharp rocks (we actually hit one of the larger rocks with our bash plate at 80kph and made a nice little dent).
We pulled up camp just shy of the NT border and the Tobermorey roadhouse/campground. We figured we didn’t need the facilities (my stomach is back to normal), so we opted for the tranquillity of free camping on the side of the highway. Unsure of the legalities, but in the three hours we’ve been parked here, we’ve only seen two other cars…
Oh, and special mention to yet another spectacular ‘outback sunset’. The colours linger for nearly 30 minutes, eventually ending with a brilliant crimson red glow. We’re also getting near this year’s ‘Super moon’ so it’s quite bright outside (so, no star photography…)
工業町のMt.Isaの街を離れた途端、アメリカの西洋劇の舞台のような赤い地（土ではなく庭石のような赤と白が混じった小さな小石）低い木々とゴロゴロとした岩山が広がる景色に。 日本では、絶対にない景色の一つでとても印象的でした。
21日は、昨晩泊まったDajarra とい町から今日は、Min Minライト現象で有名なBouliaという町を目指しました。 Innot 温泉でおじさんに聞いてとてもおすすめされたので、かなり期待をしていました。
DajarraからBouliaまでの道のりは、今までの人生で一番何もない場所を目にする事ができました。 ほんとうに道路以外なにもない！ 木さえも、草さえも、牛も、鳥も！本当に道路の端には、赤い土、小石がただひたすら地平線の彼方まで広がっているだけ。
これは、ほんとうに不思議なもので、なにもない中の何かが、心の中の何かを掻き立てます。 これ以上何もない自由。けど、何もない不自由。まさか何もない景色にこんなに感動させられるとは、思ってもいませんでした。
早くも１ヶ月以上クイーンズランド州で車旅を続け、毎日同じ様な景色に飽き飽きしてくるのではないかと思っていましたが、ところがどっこい、毎日新しい景色に出会い感動しています。 旅ってすばらしいなぁ。
Min Minライトに話を戻しましょう。Min Minライトとは、未だに解明されていない現象（ある人は、自然現象、ある人は超常現象という） の一つで、色々な話から日本語だと人魂のようなものみたいです。 昔から夜に馬と歩いていると急に馬が落ち着かなくなり、辺りを見渡すと火の玉がこちらに向かって追いかけてくるとか、ナゾを解明しようとするとその人が行方不明になっただとか、トラックを運転していると同じ猛スピードで追ってくるだとか、どこからが本当かウソかよく分からないですが、この辺りでしか見られない現象らしいです。
ミンミンライトがあるミュージアムは、入場料＄１５で、１時間おきに入場できます。 野幌の開拓記念館（なつかしい！）みたいに、動いて喋るマネキンが色んなストーリを語ってくれます。ちょっと不気味です。 でもなかなか館内は、広く良く作られていますが、なんというか、、、真実味がかなりなくてちょっとがっかり。 本物の写真やビデオがあるのかと思いきや、全て聞いた話によると的で、、なんとも。。んんん。
実際に見ちゃったらかなりビビると思うので半分見てみたい様なないような。。 でもそれがこの街のアトラクションとなって多くの人がこれを目当てに訪れているのでよしとしましょう！
今晩は、道端キャンプ。やっぱOutbackの夕焼けの色合いは、今まで見たどの夕焼けよりもオレンジ色の濃い、素晴しいグラデーション。
大自然ってこんなに色に溢れているんだと時間させられる瞬間の一つ。
そして今日もすばらしい景色に出会えた事に感謝しながら、また明日どんな新しいことに出会えるのかワクワクする１日でも大好きな時間のひとつです。
