Found out late last night why sometimes its beneficial to scope a camp site while there is still light… At least it was so far decomposed that he didn’t smell.
Also found out that there was actually water there somewhere! I thought the Leichhardt River was like all the other dry rivers that we’d crossed recently – nothing but sandy banks that were sometimes 200m across. Would love to see this area when all the water is flowing, it’d be a completely different place (though access would be severely hampered).
Our shortcut to get to Lawn Hill probably took us longer than the traditional route via Burketown. Firstly, the dirt roads weren’t in great shape (so much dry dust). Secondly, the signs were rubbish. And finally, when relied upon, our GPS wasn’t very helpful (until it was already clear which way we should be going…) – that’s strike fifty for our GPS, we’re going to try alternatives when we get some time next week in Mt. Isa.
Gregory Downs was the only ‘town’ that we saw today. It’s listed as a community, but in reality, there is a hotel. Hotel is one of those old pioneer style buildings selling alcohol, hot food, fuel and some really limited supplies. The free camping area by the river looked really nice, and we were considering staying here on our way out of Lawn Hill.
Amazingly, right near the national park is the world’s biggest zinc mine, Century Mine. We were lucky enough to be stuck behind one of the trucks (with four trailers) that was carrying something to/from the mine and the dust was just amazing. There is so much dust that we couldn’t see the truck (it would have been a few hundred meters ahead) but at times we had to stop the car because we couldn’t see which way was forwards. It was similar to driving in a blizzard, but instead of icy roads, we had corrugations. Oh, and we could taste the dust… All experiences I guess.
We arrived at the national park nice and early with a bit of time to look around and go for a quick swim/wander. It was a scorching hot day, so having a quick dip into the clear(ish) waters worked wonders. We put on some shoes and went on a quick hike to see the waterfalls and a look over the first gorge.
Waterfalls were really only waterfalls in name, more like rapids in nature, but seemed almost man made – had that ‘tropical theme hotel pool’ feeling to them, fringed with palms and other super green plants. Sadly, photos aren’t great due to the time of the day we were there (damn you early morning / late afternoon in gorges), so you’ll have to use your imagination.
As we were walking to the gorge lookout, the sun started to drop behind the hills and lit up all the grass with an amazing luminance. Pretty!
The gorge. Not sure best how to describe it… Very different to Katherine gorge, much, much smaller in every dimension – not as immediately impressive, but still a very beautiful and tranquil place for us to sit and watch the sun set.
３０日目 ６月１２日（水） Lawn Hill 国立公園
朝起きるとなんと車の横には、カンガルーの半白骨化した遺体を発見。 日が暮れる前にキャンプ地に着くというルールを守るための良い例です笑 それ以外は、元気なカンガルーがぴょんぴょん飛び回り、いろんな種類の鳥の鳴き声が聞こえ、少し行った所では、きれいな川があり、とても素敵な場所でした。
ロスはほぼ復活。今日はずっと楽しみしていたLawnHill 国立公園を目指します。 それにしても朝っぱらから日差しが激暑い！！ デリちゃんのエアコンに感謝です。
国立公園までは、また果てしないサバンナの風景を進みます。そしていくつもの乾いた川を渡ります。木の倒れ方や泥の付き方から、雨季のときは昨晩泊まった場所の様に、かなり大きな川だと思われる場所もいくつかあります。 こんなに両極端な季節って不思議。 雨季の時期はかなり通行が大変だろうけど、ちょっと見てみたいなぁ。
その他の景色といえは、 カンガルー、牛、今日は初めて生きている野生の豚ちゃんをみました！（いつも敷かれちゃって鷹に集られてるエンジェル豚ばっかりなので）
Lawn Hill国立公園は、大きな渓谷でサバンナの中にいきなり緑の塊が現れた様にこの乾燥した地域とは突然の別世界。 大きな渓谷が沢山の陰を造り、そこに沢山の植物が育ち、様々な動物たちが住み着くようになったようです。 ここはなんと大昔は、海の底だったようで、付近では海の動物を含む様々な化石がみられます。
今晩と明日泊まるLawnHill 国立公園のキャンプ場は、一人１泊 ＄５.45 安い！ これは、クイーンズランド州内の国立公園は一律の値段で、泊まるには事前に電話か、ネットで予約が必要です。 値段は一緒でもかなり施設の質にはバラツキがありますが、ここLawnHillは、最近リノベーションされたばかりらしく、インフォメーションの看板もキレイで豊富、トイレも水洗できれいで、温水ではないですがシャワーもあり、かなり充実しています。 そしてこの渓谷の石灰石のお陰で、水がとてもおいしいです！
到着したのが２時過ぎ。まだまだ外は激アツで何もする気になれないので、少し車内で一休み。 やっと少し涼しくなった４時過ぎにいよいよ探検に出かけました。（ブリスベンよりかなり西に位置するので、辺りが真っ暗になるのは７時位）
暑さしのぎにとりあえず川に入ります。ここにはクロコダイルはいないみたいです。 大きな危険なクロコダイルは、salt water crocodile おもに海水に住むクロコダイルで、真水にすむFresh Water Crocodileは、体も小さく臆病で、万が一噛まれても死ぬ程度ではないそうです笑
気温は、高くても水はかなり冷たく、底はどろでよく見えなく、深いので早々と切り上げ、滝を見に行く事にしました。
大きな滝を想像するも、滝？って大きさの滝でした。 でも形はとてもかわいらしい感じで、なんだかリゾート地のプールみたい笑 思ったよりあという間に着いたので、先の展望を目指す事に。
ごつごつした赤い岩を登ったり降りたり。 急に平らになって草原が広がったり。 気づくとさっきまで見上げていた崖の上にきていました。 上から川をみるとちょっとゾッとするけどいい景色。 反対側の崖には、夕日があたり、赤い岩がさらに赤く照らされて、とても美しい景色でした。
夕暮れは、鳥観察には、一番良い時間そのとおりで、途中沢山の種類のかわいい小鳥達に出会う事ができました。 ここには、体の小さな非常にかわいらしい小鳥が沢山います。 鳥好きの私にはパラダイス！
写真をとったり、美しい景色を満喫してそうこうしてる内に暗くなり始めたので帰路を急ぎました。
思ったより長めの夕暮れのウォーキングとなりましたが、景色、夕焼け、小鳥たち。 今日も良い一日でした！
