No respite from whatever is bothering my stomach… so another morning being sore, tired and generally a ghost.
First stop was Croydon, which I have to say, really is a town that has pride in its heritage and sharing that with the grey-haired tourist masses (and us). There are a whole heap of original 1800-era buildings, but due to day being a public holiday (Queen’s Birthday), we could only squint at it over the fence… But, Australia’s oldest store was open for business, and inside was a small museum showing the stock that was available 100 years ago. They also sold (a generic version of) Imodium, which I was desperately in need of.
Next town was Normanton, and just our luck, we missed the annual rodeo by a day… Dammit.
From Normanton the impressively flat landscape flattened out even more. It was like looking out over an ocean of barren dusty grass. Actually, something that intrigues me is what it is the cows are eating – it looks to dry and desolate.
Karumba is oft quoted as having the best sunset in Australia, as well as having the best barramundi, mud crabs and prawns – so, apart from the sunset, there isn’t much here to interest me! First impressions of the Karumba – retirement home. There are dozens of caravan parks, most of them full (as in, no vacancy) of elderly couples that have come up to escape winter. I can see the appeal to them, I know I’d much rather be somewhere warm and dry. The whole atmosphere at the caravan park that we are staying at (Karumba Point Tourist Park) has this very social feeling about it, with plenty of large tables of grey-nomads sharing a drink/feed/tale.
We bought some lures when we were in Cooktown, thinking that we’d do some fishing in Cape York, but it was incredibly gusty …and we didn’t know where to go and not end up on the news for being a salt water croc attack victim. So, making up for that, I attached two of the lures to our two rods and we headed down to the beach to watch the sunset/fish. I wasn’t having much luck casting out into the oncoming wind, and feeling like shit, I gave up and enjoyed my hot/cold spells from high upon the beach. I kept my watchful eyes for the signs of crocodiles so that didn’t lose my wife. As you probably guessed, we didn’t catch anything. But, we are total amateurs and were casting into shallow muddy waters, so it’s no big surprise.
Sunset wasn’t bad, and to be honest I’ve had better, but it’s always beautiful watching the sun set over the sea.
Risa loves seafood – it’s no secret – so to right the wrong of her never having tasted mud crab, we bought one from a local fisherman for $30. Not a bad size, especially since I was in no shape to be eating any. She also picked up 500g of banana prawns!
Risa’s impression of the mud crab “I wish there is a chewing gum like this!”. So, all the blood (a little), sweat and tears of removing those sweet succulent chunks of meat from its hardened exoskeleton paid off. Happy wife, happy life.
６月１０日（月）ロスの調子がよくないので、今日は私がサバンナ ハイウェィを走ります！
サバンナってアフリカにしかないと思ってたけど、乾燥した気候で、草原と背の低い木が生えている 場所の事をサバンナと呼ぶらしいので、（そういえば地理で習ったね）オーストラリアにはサバンナがいっぱいあるのだ。
ここからは本当にサバンナ！ TOTOのアフリカって曲がずっと頭から離れない。 周りは、地平線の果てまで平らで、サバンナの景色が広がっている。 ひょっこりゾウとかキリンとかが出てくるんじゃないかって思っちゃう様なTVで見るザ アフリカな景色。 でもここでは、牛、カンガルー、トカゲ。（おもに道路には、車に敷かれたカンガルーに鷹、ワシが群がっている、、）
道路は全て舗装されているけど、ところどころアスファルトの部分が車１台分の幅しかないので、対向車が着たときは、舗装なしの赤い土の上に少しよけなければならないんだけど、境目がガタガタなので、ガッターンてなってちょっとコワイ。 とくにRoad Trainというトラックの荷台が３つとか着いてるまさにトレインな巨大トラックとすれ違うときは、大きさも風力もすごいので本当にコワイー！！ でもこんな過酷な場所を（気温は、３０°越えのピーカン照り）自転車で旅行している人を何人か見かけました。しかもそのほとんどが年配の方。。すごいパワーだな。尊敬します。
ロスは、めったに助手席にいることがないので、最初のうちは景色を楽しんでいたけど、何度かうとうとしていました。 いつも助手席でうたた寝をする私の気持ちが分かったそうです笑
私も足が痛くなってきて、（信号がないので、アクセル踏みっぱなしで、かかとがいたくなるんです。） ロスも暇すぎて、どうしても運転したいというので、交代。今日の目的地Karumbaまで７０km程。 途中、大きな水たまりに沢山の鳥の姿を見る事ができました。 その中でも赤い頭をした丹頂にそっくりな鳥きれいだったなー。
Karumbaは、オーストラリアでも１、２の釣りの名所。人口は６００人らしいですが、釣りと太陽を求めていつも人口の２倍くらいの旅行者がキャラバンと船を運びやってくるそうで、今日もどこのキャラバンパークも一杯。
ようやく一番大きなキャラバンパークにギリギリデリちゃんを停めれるスペースをみつけました。みんな°どでかいキャラバンに船も運んでる！ キャラバンも船も持ってないのは私達と隣のイギリス人カップルだけ笑 みんなここに最低でも１週間ほど滞在してのんびり休暇（リタイヤ生活を楽しんでるようです）
温水シャワーとかはあるけど、私たちのサイトには電気はないし（いらないけど）それでも停めるだけで＄２９！ トイレがあればいいだけの私たちには高い。（しかも景色は全くないし） 若者貧乏旅には、ちょっと。。
でも今回初めてこのようなキャラバンパークに泊まって気づいたのが、ここは年配方の社交の場。 若者はバックパッカーで新しい旅仲間を作り、一緒にパーティーをしたり若者の楽しみをエンジョイするのと同じで、キャラバンパークは年配の方が旅仲間をつくり、美味しいディナーとお酒とおしゃべりを楽しむ場所みたい。 なんだかそれを発見すると、うれしくなりました笑
隣のシーフードショップでローカルで新鮮なゆでた海老５００gと、その店で教えてもらったボブさんのお家に行きここの有名なMud Crab を一匹購入して釣りをしながら食べる事にしました。
ところがビーチに向かうもあいにくの干潮。 小さな魚が跳ねてるのがみえるけど、なかなか遠くにルアーが飛ばず悪銭苦闘。 そうこうしてる内にこの町のもう一つの目玉、美しい夕日も沈みロスの体調も優れないので、キャラバンパークに戻り夕食のカニと海老の豪華ディーナー！！ 写真のサイズのカニさんは小さめサイズですが、これでも十分大きいよね。 これで＄３０です。 殻はものすんごく堅くてかなり悪銭苦闘。ペンチを使って解体するも、指を何カ所か刺されました。。 身は、大きなはさみと付け根くらいなもので、大きさの割に毛ガニのようには、身がびっしりではないのがちょっと残念。 でもデカイはさみ、食べごたえもあり、甘くて美味しかったです！あとミソもなかなかいけました♫ エビもジャンボサイズで５、６匹くらいでおなか一杯になったのでまた明日の楽しみ♥
ああ、今日は良い夢みれそう笑 ロスの体調も良くなってるといいなー。
