Woken early-ish by the bright sunshine, so I was quite surprised that when I went outside, everything was wet. Apparently there was quite a storm last night…
Usual start to the morning, quick exercise, pack up, update blog then breakfast. Risa was quite excited about seeing Kanazawa City, so I tried not to dawdle too much, but before we could enjoy ourselves, I had to try and take the Delica to a mechanic. Over the past week there has been a mechanical/metallic noise coming from the left-rear of the vans brakes. The past few days it’d gotten worse… We tried to find a Mitsubishi dealer (so that I could get a new fuel filler cap), but all the dealers in this area were shut on Tuesdays… So, we just went to the first place that we saw, which happened to be a petrol station. The mechanic quickly jacked the car up, and took off the rear wheels and in no time told me (through Risa) that the piston in the left-rear brake was seized (was constantly stuck on), so it had worn through the two month old brake pad, and was starting to damage the brake disc. Great. We were quoted ¥30,000. Ouch.
Since I didn’t really have much choice about repairing it, we left it with him, and took the ‘cub out to go explore the city. We quickly returned to the geisha/maiko district (Higashi) to see what it was like during the daytime (and the shops were open). Aesthetically, I preferred it at night time. We quickly looked in a few shops (local speciality is gold leaf), couldn’t afford anything, and left.
One of the main attractions of Kanazawa is Ken-roku-en, A beautiful Japanese park. Entrance was only ¥300, which was slightly cheaper than most attractions. A slight bonus! We walked around (and sat under the trees, absolutely exhausted) for an hour or two, looking at the beautiful ponds, mossy gardens and twisted trees (requiring human intervention to survive). It was serene and beautiful, but we were both far too tired to enjoy it. I think it’s getting close to the time that we have a rest day (with minimal driving/travelling).
We quickly walked across the bridge to have a look at the Kanazawa Castle, which was actually huge (though, quite modern, having been in a constant state of renovation for some time). Again, we were exhausted (and it was uncomfortably hot), so we didn’t linger.
We jumped back on the bike, and went to explore some more. We headed to Nagamachi, which was the old samurai district. There were quite a few houses/museums, but they all had an entrance fee, and we didn’t want to see it enough to part with ¥500. We just rode around the area and looked at the houses for a while before seeing what looked like a crazy/interesting alley of markets. With nothing better to do, we parked and had a look. It wasn’t as crazy as I thought it was going to be, but it was still a bustling market full of seafood/fruit/vegetable vendors (and like everywhere else we’d been too, plenty of western tourists). We looked until we were too tired to look anymore (which was about thirty minutes) and returned to the bike.
It was 4PM, and I still hadn’t had any lunch. Risa read in some magazine/website/book that there was a local (Japanese) curry restaurant that was quite highly acclaimed. I’d been hoping to ‘accidentally’ run into one of the shops, but still hadn’t. Risa isn’t a huge (Japanese) curry fan, so she was indifferent, which didn’t help my stomach. We’d been quoted an estimated time for the Delica to be ready of 6PM, so we had about two hours to kill. I tried to find the nearest restaurant, but it was at least 5kms away. Risa also had a friend (from high school) that she wanted to meet up with, but he wasn’t sure when he’d be finished work, which made it hard to make dinner plans. Long story short, the Delica was ready early, we went to meet Risa’s friend, then together we went to dinner. Dinner was awesome, and huge, and I was in a food coma afterwards, which didn’t help the driving cause. And neither did the onsen. I passed out about 9:30, which was a few minutes after we’d parked and unpacked.
28日目：金沢市（石川県）—鶴来市しらやまさん道の駅（石川県）
昨晩雨が降ったのは、気づいていた。今まで窓は開けていてもシートがぬれることがなかったのに、、今日は、私のシートだけぬれていた（／＿；）朝食を食べている間に日向でシートを乾かし、出発。
せっかく大きな町にいるので、今日はようやくずっと変な音がしていたデリカを点検してもらう事に。 三菱のお店を探すも火曜は、全店休業らしい、、アンラッキー！ すぐ近くのガソリンスタンドで修理もやっているらしいのでチェックしてもらうと、やはり故障が。部品を取り寄せて修理をすると最短でも６時までかかるとのこと、、、残念だけど、しょうがないね。そして部品と修理代で３万ちょっと、、イタイ出費です。
今日は、午前中に金沢市内見学で午後は能登半島ドライブ予定だったけど、デリカがないので、まる１日金沢観光に変更。
まずは、昨晩行ったひがし茶屋街が、昼にはどんな感じなのか見てみたかったので行ってみる事に。昨日のひっそりと静かな感じは健在だけれど、日の光もあり昨日とは、また違う感じがする。金箔のお店や、町家を利用したケフェなどおしゃれなお店が開いていた。 でも私たちは、夜の感じの方が好きでした。
ひがし茶屋見学のあとは、兼六園へ。ここは、とても古い由緒正しい庭園です。 入場料は、３００円。 大きな池や滝、枝振りの良い推定年連１００年を超える松の数々や日本初の噴水などなど魅力満載のお庭でした。けれど、連日の暑さと疲労感のせいで日陰で休んででばっかり笑 からすの行水もかわいかった 園のいくつかの木では、すでにうっすらと紅葉が始まっていました☆
兼六園を後にして、ちかくの金沢城へ。ここは、何度も大火や取り壊しなどがありオリジナルではないけれど、ちょっとづつ色々な残された資料を主に再建しているらしい。 ここのお城のスゴさはお堀の大きさ！ 高さも高いし、広さもかなり広大。天守閣には、お金がかかるし、オリジナルではないので行かなかったけど、すばらしさは、外からでも存分にわかりました。
次は、武家屋敷の建ち並ぶエリアへ。ここは、お侍さんたちか住んでいた所。歩けばすべて見れたんだろうけど、疲れてたし、暑いしで歩く気にには、とうていなれず。角館の武家屋敷の方がりっぱに残されてるかも。一方通行などが多くて迷路みたいでぐるぐる同じ場所を何度か回ってしまった。正直そこまで惹かれる場所ではなかったので退散。
カブに乗っていると風を受けれて少し涼しいので、少しの間あてもなくカブでぶらぶらすることに。とちゅうでデパートなどがある中心街で下町チックなアーケードを発見したのでちらっとのぞいてみる。ここは、金沢の台所。八百屋さん、肉屋さん、魚屋さん。金沢近辺の様々な海と山の幸が並び、地元客と観光客で賑わっている。 魚は、高級魚のどぐろなど、北海道ではなかなか見ない魚や、野菜もみたことののない葉もの野菜やわさびがそのまま売られていたりでおもしろかった。 金沢の家庭でよく食べられているというとり野菜鍋の素もゲット☆これは、みそベースの鍋でちょっとニンニク風味で、金沢の冬にはかかせないメニューらしい。
お腹がそろそろすいて来たので、もう一つの金沢名物チャンカレことチャンピョンカレーを食べに行く事に。 これは、前にウワサの県民ショーで取り上げられていてちょっときになっていたし、一番人気のLカツカレーは、カツカレーマニアのロス君にはたまらないシロモノ。 店舗検索すると一番ちかくてもここから２０分ほどの場所だった。 場所がなかなか見つからずにもたもたしていると、車の修理が終わったと連絡が。 いったんチャンカレをあきらめ先に引き取りに行く事に。
無事デリカの修理も終わり、高校時代の友達のツノの大学院のある野々市市に向かう。ここには、チャンカレの本店もある☆ ツノ氏を大学まで迎えに行き、彼のエスコートでチャンカレ本店へ。彼とは、共通の友達が多いので、いつもお互いの事はどうしているかなんとなく知っていたけど、実は再会は卒業以来だった事が判明。ショック！！ 久々の再会に感動と、チャンカレとの初対面に大フィーバーですね。
ロスは、ジャンボLカツカレー、りさは迷った末、ツノと同じLカツカレー。 でてきたカレーは、カツがドンとのってて、きゃべつものっているカレー。デカイ。 味は、カツカレーですね。私は、インドカレー意外は、あまりお店のカレーって好まないので、よく味の違いはわからないけど、ロスはウマイといってうれしそうにほおばっている。 ひとつ残念だったのが、ジャンボLカツは、カツがジャンボなのではなくて、ご飯が多いのだ。 それでもロス君気合いで完食。ツノはペロットLカツ完食。私は、残念ながらご飯が多すぎて途中でリタイア。
ツノを大学まで送り届け、えりかの１月の結婚式での再会を近い、あっと言う間の再会は、おしまい。
道の駅の途中で２００円の温泉に行き、今日は、鶴来市の道の駅で車泊。治部煮も食べたし、チャンカレも食べたし、ツノにも会えたし、石川県満喫したぜ。
