Every time I hear The Tip, it reminds me of Archer… Anyway, childish jokes aside, today we went forth to conquer the very north of Australia, something very few people have ever done (if you forget the stream of cars/tour buses arriving/leaving the car park).
I bemoaned yesterday that a regular car could have made it to the top… well, I may have been a wee-bit premature. You could have made it within 5km, but there were a series of rather deep ‘puddles’ and deep ruts that a regular car would have struggled with (not pictured). I feel justified in owning/travelling with a gas-guzzling four-wheel-drive. Another thing – I didn’t expect the top to be lush rainforest, though when I tried to think what I thought it should be I had no real thoughts on it.
From the car park it’s about a 15 minute walk up over the rocky headland down to a small sign that denotes the very north of the Australian continent. Yes, there are other islands that are further north (like the ones you can see in the background).
We really got lucky with the weather. It was a beautiful sunny morning for us to enjoy from the comfort of our van, watching the sun rise over the sea in Somerset. But, within the space of 10 minutes, the wind picked up and it began to howl, bringing with it cold drizzle. As we arrived at the The Tip (also known as Pajinka) the skies were clear and the sun was very much out (I have the neck/arm tan/burn to prove it).
Geographical significance aside, it’s actually a pretty cape, with a nice vista of tropical islands and beaches over beautiful clear waters. We saw dolphins (Risa said she saw one do a backflip/barrel-roll) and turtles, but no crocodiles yet.
We did like all the other tourists and queued up for our photographs to put on facebook (we had Optus HSDPA…).
I even had a jump photo go sour when I landed on some slimy mossy rock… amateur, always got to check your landing area.
Really find it interesting the similarities to Fiji. The people here don’t look aboriginal, they speak a different language (sounds very ‘Polynesian’, as does the music) and the buildings are very reminiscent of the ones in Fiji. The weather and beaches are also pretty similar… Prices are different though!
A man at a tourist information/shop (Croc Tent) sold us on the idea of a romantic dinner/camp at the Loyalty Beach campsite. Sunset over the Arafura Sea, nice beach resort-style lighting, and good meals. Two out of three ain’t bad!
We scored a nice location right on the beach. Also, this is the first accommodation that we’ve had to pay for (RACQ paying for the hotel in Cairns doesn’t count). It was nice to have a proper shower again. It’s only been a week…
２３日目 ６月5日（木） ついにオーストラリア大陸最北端に到着！
今日は、朝食後Somersetの残りの廃墟を見てみるためキャンプ場の周りを散策するも、物置の骨組みみたいなものとお墓くらいなものでその他は何もないようでした。もっとコンクリートの建物とか町の面影があるのかと思っていたのでちょっと残念です。
しかししかし、今日のメインイベントは、オーストラリア大陸最北端の地へ行く事！！
元来たガタボコ道を戻り、目指すは最北端の地！ 最北端の地までももちろんガタボコ、川渡りです。道路幅は、車１台分のみなので、途中大型４DWツアーバス（４DWダけど、でかいトラックみたい！）とギリギリで片側通行したり、なかなか最後まで容赦なしです。
ケープヨークに着いて気づいたのが、植物の種類の変化の突然さについて。 すこし日陰で、赤土、川の側は、緑がとても濃くジュラシックパークのような濃密なジャングルが広がり、すこし進み、平らな日のよくあたる砂地のような場所は、アフリカのサバンナのような背の低い木と草原が広がっています。 両極端な植物、気候が、本当に隣合わせになっているのが、とても興味深いです。
ジャングル、サバンナを繰り返し到着した場所は、ビーチ。 キャンプ場を出発したときは、雨だった天気も晴れ、日差しがジリジリのカンカン照り。 真冬でもやはり日が強く、２８°以上はあるかな。 オーストラリア大陸最北端は、岩山の向こう側にあります。 岬は、かなり強い風が吹いていたので、ピーカン照りの岩登りにはぴったりです。
かなりごつごつの岩を登ったり、降りたり２０分程でやっと大陸最北端の看板に到着！ 周りは、とてもきれいな海に囲まれ、目の前には無人島が。
まだまだオーストラリア１周の旅は、始まったばかりですが、本で言うなら第一章終。それか序章の終わり？ なんともたどり着くには、なかなかタフな道で、簡単には到着できない場所なので、とても感激でした。 お決まりの記念写真を何枚か。ロスが最初のジャンプショットで見事にビーサンが滑り、尻もちをついてズボンがぬれました笑
そして何とイルカのカップル？も歓迎してくれました！かなり近くだったので、しばらくはっきり姿が見えました。 にしても、とてもキレイな海で島々が遠くまで見えとても美しい。
でもクロコダイルギャングがここの地を仕切っているので、こんなキレイなビーチがたくさんあるのに泳げないなんて、何てもったいないんだろう！！
素晴しい絶景を堪能して車に戻る途中、なななんと超ラッキー！！ イルカさんがバックフリップでさようならをしてくれました。 なにこのVIP対応？！おたる水族館のショーで見たバックフリプ、ワイルドなイルカさん達もするんですね。いやぁ〜いいもん見せて頂きました。 ありがとう！！！
次は、もう一つのビーチPunsand Bayに行きました。ここは、途中で雨が降って来たのもありますが、ちょっとカフェも立派で、小さいけどプールもあったり、ちょっと観光地っぽすぎたので、一瞬散歩して、駐車場でサンドイッチ食べて退散。
天気も良くなって来たので、昨日Croc Tentのお兄さんに教えてもらった、すてきな浜辺のレストランがあるLoyalty Beachを目指し、今晩はここに泊まります。
その前に、Seisiaという小さな町もちらっと車から拝見。そして電波の良いBamaga でブログ更新などなどを済ませ、いざキャンプ場へ。
Loyalty Beach は、キャンプバンで２名だと一泊＄２４。 あったかいシャワーの施設もあります。 どこに停めてもよいので、もちろんビーチの目の前のスポットをゲット。 夕飯は、ちょっと贅沢に、海辺のレストランで夕日をみながらのロマンティックディナー！ ロス君は、Fish&
Chips, 私は、Fish&Chipsを揚げるかわりに普通に焼いてもらいました。味はまぁ普通だけど、なんとも景色がバツグン☆ お店のお姉さんは、目の前の浜にはクロ様が住んでるので、よく目を凝らしてれば運が良かったらみれるわよっていってたけど、クロ様は見えませんでした。 でもとってもトロピカルな素敵なディナーとなりました♥
